LA Rain 03:11
LA Rain Can you hear the thunder rolling through my heart? Yes I’m sure today is gunna rain The forecast is for sunshine but the sky is dark There is lighting in the city once again I saw a Texas sunset and it blew my mind And Nashville was candy to my ears But this LA rain, washed away the stain Oh mercy, where you been? Let it rain Open up the heavens let it rain Lord you know I’m dry Let it rain Oh mercy, where you been? The son of Johnny Cash he did shake my hand Yes I did my best not to cry The hipsters at the 5 spot looked me up and down As the jukebox played the bee bop throughout the night But a honky tonk don’t mean much when you got no legs My mojo been running low on steam On that whisky television I swear I saw Hank Williams Oh mercy, where you been? Let it rain Open up the heavens let it rain Lord you know I’m dry Let it rain Oh mercy, where you been? Now I’m crying bullets For the poets and the prophets For the mothers and the fathers For my sisters and my brothers For the drifters and the dreamers The searchers and the seekers The thunder in the desert and the ears that can hear it Let it rain Open up the heavens let it rain Lord you know I’m dry Let it rain Oh mercy, where you been? Let it rain Let it rain Let it rain Let it rain Let it rain Let it rain Let it rain Oh mercy, where you been? Oh mercy, where you been? Oh mercy, where you been?

Shaking hands with the devil Don’t go shaking hands with the devil Don’t go making deals with that man I tell you, he’s a thief and he’s a liar He want to lock you up any way he can You wake up every morning at the cross roads You wake up with murder on your mind But the road to revenge is paved with sorrow Yeah an eye for an eye make the whole world blind Mary, Mary, how does your garden grow? My child that’s easy, we gone reap what we sow Don’t go shaking hands with the devil Don’t go making deals with that man I tell you, he’s a thief and he’s a liar He want to lock you up any way he can Well you wake up every morning at the cross roads You wake up with murder on your mind But the road to revenge is paved with sorrow Yeah an eye for an eye make the whole world blind Mary, Mary, how does your garden grow? My child that’s easy, we gone reap what we sown Judas, Judas, what’s that silver in your hand That’s no way to get to the promised land So don’t go shaking hands with the devil Don’t go making deals with the man Don’t go shaking hands with the devil Don’t go making deals with the man Don’t go shaking hands with the devil Don’t go making deals with the man Don’t go shaking hands with the devil

Comin' Down 04:54
Coming’ Down Sunday morning Nashville That’s alright with me For the first time in a long time The world outside I see Her leaves once were green But now they’re turning brown And just like the rain They too will come down Coming down Coming down Falling never felt so good This time around Coming down Coming down Hello sweet mercy Coming down There’s thunder and there’s lightning As my bones begin to shake That TV weather man Said the levee’s gunna break But that spirit train it took me To the sunny side of town And I got high, as I cried And lay my burden down Coming down Coming down Falling never felt so good This time around Coming down Coming down Hello sweet mercy Coming down Pull back the curtain On these broken things Heard the sky of a thousand songs It began to sing And then I saw an angel With that needle in her hand Sowed my heart together again Told me that I can Coming down Coming down Falling never felt so good This time around Coming down Coming down Hello sweet mercy Coming down

South side of the river To the mother of my fathers mother
 yes I know you’re sleeping
but the streets of Grafton they still echo the sounds of your weeping
I know things were different in your day
no ring was on your finger
and so the child was sent away
the south side of the river The father turns the handle round
 on the rumour mill
some say “he’s Jack the shearer”
others say “a stockman from Tenterfield” but this man he don’t matter much no he’s had his fun and been no this man he no man at all ‘cos he’s nowhere to be seen
 So go on, go on
leave her on the south side of the river where nobody knows your name
 so go on, go on
I wonder if your daughter will remember as you turn and walk back to your shame
they say
“you have got to love your neighbour” they say
“mercy triumphs over judgment”
But I’m afraid on that day
judgement got the better of mercy judgement got the better of mercy Now good people can you tell me is she the one to blame?
either way this bastard child she has got a name tell me how does it feel
now the lights have been turned on?
oh you're casting stones at innocence and she done nothing wrong
 So go on, go on
leave her on the south side of the river where nobody knows your name
 so go on, go on
I wonder if your daughter will remember as you turn and walk back to your shame To the mother of my fathers mother yes I know you’re sleeping
but woman don’t you cry
you can stop your weeping lift your head can you see the one they call redeemer? just like you he’s been to the south side of the river So go on go on
leave her on the south side of the river...

I Am You 05:08
I am you Let us love each other We’re all sisters and brothers On this road together Let us love each other I see you marching Marching in your streets I hear you crying Crying out for peace But there’s one thing I just can’t understand How can you preach peace with a gun in your hand? You give a man religion And watch him build a wall You give a man a title And watch him start a war You give a man a gun And order him him to kill But nothing comes from violence and nothing ever will There’s blood on your streets There’s blood in foreign lands There’s blood crying out From the palms of our hands Blood is the ink On our history’s page Yes love must be the law if our history gunna change So keep on marching Marching in your streets keep on crying Crying out for peace But there’s one thing We got to understand We can’t preach peace with a gun in our hand Declare your independence The land of the free Justify your vengeance As you curse your enemy Oh but you are blind How I wish that you could see That I am you and you are me So lets go marching Marching in our streets Lets go crying Crying out for peace Yes there’s one thing We now understand We can’t preach peace with a gun in our hand We can’t preach peace with a gun in our hand We can’t preach peace with a gun in our hand

Sailor Sailor Tonight I hear the ocean Crashing on the beach Her waves come tumbling Right down my street She got something to say Something to teach She’s so close tonight But she’s out of reach She calling my name It echoes through the night I don’t know if she wants to make love or pick a fight I wish I understood The language that she speaks Oh she’s so close tonight But she’s still out of reach Sailor sailor You belong On that rolling sea Sailor sailor You chase the wind Longing to be free The ghost of your shipwreck holds a wisdom that is deep So close tonight yet out of reach I go stumbling through the darkness I stagger through the rain All this wasted ammunition Trips me up again I been choking on these sermons that I preach I’m so close tonight but I'm out of reach Sailor sailor You belong On that rolling sea Sailor sailor You chase the wind Longing to be free There’s a light on in the window Through the curtains you did peek She’s so close tonight but she’s out of reach Your so close tonight but your out of reach So close tonight but Out of reach Out reach Out of reach Out of reach

High Horse 05:57
High horse gave me a knife and sent me to a gunfight cut off both my legs and you told me to run Sowed my lips together now you want me to sing? This aint fair This aint fair This aint fair This aint fair This aint fair This aint fair Plucked out both my eyes and asked me what I see Chained me to the wall and you threw away the key Now got got the nerve to tell me that I’m free This aint right This aint right This aint right This aint right This aint right This aint right Hey there mister Have you heard the news? There’s lightning in the thunder and it’s coming after you You built your castle on the sand Please tell me how’s the view? Cos it’s a long way down from that High horse your’e riding on Maggies got her farm, the wardens got his jail Delilahs got her scissors and Jonahs got his whale You got a three piece suit but my soul it aint for sale Keep your change Keep your change Keep your change Keep your change Keep your change Keep your change So you want to catch the wind and sell it in a can You got a saddle for the lightning you got your pyramid plan Well I hope you got a hose ‘cos it’s about to hit the fan Step aside Step aside Step aside Step aside Step aside Step aside Hey there mister can you hear the call? There’s a song coming up and it’s circling your walls Your Jericho's surrounded get ready for the fall Cos it’s a long way down from that High horse your’e riding on Come stand on 6th and South San Pedro That trickle down jungle ghetto With cardboard beds and concrete pillows Behold your tax cuts for your friends Like dogs beneath the masters table You aint willing but you sure seem able This aint fair, this aint fair, this aint fair This aint right, this aint right, this aint right Keep your change, keep your change, keep your change Step aside, step aside, step aside

The Least 03:22
What you did for the least What you did for the least You did it unto me What you did for the least You did it unto me That’s me sleeping at the bus stop That’s me begging in the street What you did for the least You did it unto me I’m the orphan you hear crying I’m a war torn refugee I’m locked up in a prison I’m in a sweat shop factory I’m a call girl with a habit Aint no cure for my disease What you did for the least You did it unto me Every Sunday morning I can hear you singing “glory hallelujah” You say it’s me your seeking But I aint in no building Got no four walls and a ceiling You’ll find me in the broken The beaten and the bleeding I’m a widow right now grieving Hungry, need feeding I’m naked and I’m freezing Can you hear me pleading? I’m your scape goat, John Doe Suicide watch on death row Standing on the gallows I’m the star of your freak show I’m the junkie from the ghetto My bank account is zero Rehab, Reject ,I’m your missing persons photo And if you really want to know What’s the truth that sets you free What you did for the least You did it unto me What you did for the least You did it unto me I’m your conscience burning slowly Call me empathy What you did for the least What you did for the least What you did for the least You did it unto me

Mercy Train 04:48
Mercy Train Lets go ride the Mercy Train I can hear her whistle in my dreams Lets go ride the mercy train From New York City down to New Orleans Her rusted tracks they’re winding As she weaves on through that narrow gate All aboard the Mercy Train As the light begins to fade Can I sing to raise the dead? Yes I know that might sound strange But I believe what Dylan said That “the times they’re gunna change” Oh the choir’s not yet muted And whilst my voice still strong I will sing to raise the dead Cos a candle only burns for so long Let them wheels of justice roll on Let them wheels of justice roll on Let them wheels of justice roll on Let them wheels of justice roll on Come gather round the wisdom tree Hey people take a look and see That crystal ball of history ought to say something to you and to me She calls to those with ears that hear Her whispers now become a shout “All aboard the Mercy Train… Aint it time we let forgiveness out” Let them wheels of justice roll on Let them wheels of justice roll on Let them wheels of justice roll on Let them wheels of justice roll on All aboard the Mercy Train All aboard the Mercy Train All aboard the Mercy Train

about

Dan Hannaford – Rumblin’ Wheel

For many, it’s about the journey; the long and dusty road one tracks in order to get somewhere, anywhere. The destination doesn’t really matter so much as how you make your way, the route you follow, the risks you take. Rumblin’ Wheel is, for Hannaford, more than a mere follow-up album and it’s not the destination either, but more another part of a journey which has defined his entire life. This is a record which – coming some eight years after his full-length debut, 2015’s I Cried Bullets – was pieced together over three separate trips to the US, interrupted by family highs and lows, a global pandemic. It’s seen Hannaford evolve as a songwriter and story-teller, it’s seen him weave his own narrative into stories about a world in a constant state of flux: Rumblin’ Wheel is an odyssey in itself.

Sonically, Rumblin’ Wheel sits under the fairly vast Americana umbrella (swathes of western swing, blues, straight country and simple folk) and boasts the incredible instrumental talents of bass player Taras Prodaniuk (Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello); guitarist Billy Watts (Eric Burdon); steel player Marty Rifkin (Bruce Springsteen) along with a host of others, including Hannaford’s father, John, performing backing vocals on ‘All The Wrong Things’ and his daughter, Imani, singing on ‘Mama Don’t You Cry’.

In all, Rumblin’ Wheel is both a by-product of Dan Hannaford’s life journey, as well as being one in its own right. It sees a seasoned musician take a number of risks along a well-worn path, the result being something refreshingly different, at the same time being strong and worth the effort. A journey, as most everyone knows, takes many forms, lending credence to that old adage that not all who wander are lost – Dan Hannaford, as is evidenced with Rumblin’ Wheel, knows the way.
